Procession takes patron of fishermen to Isla Contoy

Virgin of Charity of Cobre

Notable participación de pescadores en procesión de la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre

The procession of the Virgin of Caridad del Cobre left the dock for Isla Contoy at 8am with about 500 Catholics participating, in about 40 boats, mainly seafarers, and especially fishermen. The weather was good and the massive religious event went off without a hitch. The wind was a little stronger when they returned, but there were no incidents.
The Virgin of Charity of Cobre will remain in Isla Contoy for the duration of the lobster season, for the care and protection of the seafarers, and a few days after the season ends, she will be returned to Isla Mujeres.  The event included members of the fishermen's cooperatives, of the tourism groups, whale shark permittees, the Port Authority, the Navy, the ferry companies, the Harbor Master, Civil Protection, and the Red Cross.
The Mass for the placement of the Virgin in her niche took place at 11am, and the families remained on the island sharing fellowship until they departed around 2pm to return to Isla Mujeres.

The worker is named, but the "visibly angry" person complaining about him is not. She characterizes the worker as arrogant, and she wants him removed or fired. Among other complaints, she says he sometimes does not stamp the documents required to get per diem payments.

Preparing for the DEMA show in November

ISLA MUJERES, 13 de septiembre.-.

The "náuticos" of Isla Mujeres, and others who provide tourism services that are related to the sea, are preparing to attend the DEMA (Diving Equipment and Marketing Association) in Las Vegas on November 19-22, to participate in this international promotional event. Several islander entrepreneurs have expressed interest in attending this year and are seeking support from the OVC, Office of Visitors & Conventions of Cancun. For years, the entrepreneurs of Isla Mujeres have had to organize to ensure their participation, where other cities like Cozumel and Cancun grab more attention.
Although this event focuses on diving and nautical tourism, the islanders also seek to promote swimming with the whale sharks and swimming with sailfish. These two activities are considered unique to this area, and it is important to promote them internationally.
The director of municipal Tourism said the necessary arrangements are being made for a delegation from Isla Mujeres to attend this important international promotional event, to offer a variety of attractions including swimming with the world's largest fish, swimming with sail fish, and visiting the Underwater Sculpture Museum (MUSA), among other activities.

Karen Rosenberg's
NEED DIABETES SUPPLIES FOR OCTOBER DIABETES CLINIC: We have been doing Diabetes Clinics on Isla Mujeres for five years, with more local residents participating annually. This is a joint project of bilingual social workers, nurses, and other health care professionals originally from the USA, working with Isleno community partners. Diabetes is now the primary cause of death in Mexico.
We are in great need of donations of glucometers and strips, specifically these brands: Contour, Contour Next and OneTouch. Many doctor's offices, clinics and hospitals discard strips that are almost expired. Strips are actually still effective for at least a year after expiration dates so often those are the ones that are most often donated. If you have any contact with medical professionals or pharmaceutical reps, you can often get current supplies. We can also use lancets, lancet devices, alcohol pads, and syringes.
The next clinic will be in October 2014. Contact Karen Rosenberg at kfrlisw@gmail.com or Kathy Ennis at kathy@kathyandkeith.mx or FB either of us. We accept monetary donations too and will buy strips to bring down.
