    Filman comercial en la ínsula

    0 09 de septiembre de 2014
Yesterday, for the filming of a commercial featuring Cuban actor William Levy, about 300 meters of Playa Norte were cordoned off. Fans, young and old, were disappointed when they were not able to obtain autographs, although many islanders had waited for hours. The Director of Tourism said the event will benefit the promotion of the island, and the filming benefited the local hotels, especially  Ixchel Beach, el Privuege (sic), Aluxes and el Palace. The Cuban actor stayed at the latter. The commercial also includes actresses  Vanessa Huppenkothen & Jessica Segura.

Five members of the Navy, accompanied by a dog, patrolled through the streets of Isla Mujeres, providing security. Even though it is low season, the Navy continues to patrol and this group of five and a dog were seen on  Rueda Medina avenue yesterday. They did not report anything and continued their patrol down this main street, a place were many tourists pass. Some people took photographs of them, and others applauded as they passed, because this military group is very loved and respected by the islanders.

Increasing alcoholism among adolescents

Creciente alcoholismo entre la adolescencia[+] Ver mas
The inauguration of the "2nd National Week of Alcoholics Anonymous for Youth" was held at the high school, Colegio Bachilleres.  Dr. Antonio Salas and Dr. David Valenzo, Directors of the medical center ISSSTE and the Ministry of Health of Quintana Roo, (sic) respectively, spoke to the students and acknowledged that alcoholism is increasing among youths.  ( Dr David Valenzo is the Director of the local hospital. The Director of the state Health Dept is Dr. Juan Lorenzo Ortegón Pacheco.)
They used images to show the effects of alcohol on the human body, demonstrating how it causes the body to age prematurely, among other effects from the disease of alcoholism. Dr Valenzo praised the work of AA to raise awareness around the country and in this municipality, where joint efforts with the volunteers from this self help organization can generate progress.
There is a voluntary agreement with the municipal government for five years, ratified by the current administration, which includes targeting this segment of the population with an ongoing program of awareness. Members of the regional and national branches of the Central Mexicana de Servicios Generales de Alcohólicos Anónimos, A.C., are assisting in this national campaign, which brings discussions to high schools, middle schools, and the fifth grade of primary schools.
A survey in 2011 by the National Council Against Addictions (CONADIC) said that alcohol use was growing among people aged 12-17, with some consumption every month reported by a third of this group, and there are some reporting "high consumption" in a daily or customary manner, which is ultimately addictive.
There are three groups in Isla Mujeres that address this health problem. The AA group "Isla Mujeres" meets at the upstairs level of Casa Rex on Nicolas Bravo street, downtown, which is 30 meters from the City Hall, with daily session at 9am to 10am, and at 8:30pm to 10p on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and in English  at 6:30pm to 7:30pm.
The group "La Luz" (the light) meets at Jurel street at the intersection with Contoy avenue, 40 meters from the tap water station (cárcamo de agua potable) daily from 8:30pm to 10pm and the group "Una Esperanza en mi Vida" (a hope in my life) meets at Mero street, by the Taxi Union lodge daily from 7pm to 8:30. Also, for ten years there has been a group, "Nuevo Amanecer" (New Dawn) at the city jail, who can only enter during visitors hours on Tuesday from 5pm to 6pm.

Increased insecurity
Avanza la inseguridad [+] Ver mas
The information about a burglary in La Gloria in this article was previously translated, and PE notes additionally that there have been 'countless' robberies of foreigners in their hotel rooms and in posadas such as this last one, that are mostly not resolved.(Posada usually means an inn, hotelito, or B&B). The highest incidence has occurred at the southern part of the island, were there are many houses rented to visitors, and lately this has begun to happen in the colonias, at houses where previously the windows could be left open, but now they end up with a visit from thieves.

Karen Rosenberg's
NEED DIABETES SUPPLIES FOR OCTOBER DIABETES CLINIC: We have been doing Diabetes Clinics on Isla Mujeres for five years, with more local residents participating annually. This is a joint project of bilingual social workers, nurses, and other health care professionals originally from the USA, working with Isleno community partners. Diabetes is now the primary cause of death in Mexico.
We are in great need of donations of glucometers and strips, specifically these brands: Contour, Contour Next and OneTouch. Many doctor's offices, clinics and hospitals discard strips that are almost expired. Strips are actually still effective for at least a year after expiration dates so often those are the ones that are most often donated. If you have any contact with medical professionals or pharmaceutical reps, you can often get current supplies. We can also use lancets, lancet devices, alcohol pads, and syringes.
The next clinic will be in October 2014. Contact Karen Rosenberg at kfrlisw@gmail.com or Kathy Ennis at kathy@kathyandkeith.mx or FB either of us. We accept monetary donations too and will buy strips to bring down.
